About

The Upside is an independent, Pop Punk Rock band from Maryland, USA. The band members, Amelia Congedo (vocals), Patrick McCarthy (guitar, vocals), Andrew Murray (drums), and David Boegner (bass), have been playing music together for nearly a decade. The group officially formed The Upside in January of 2023, and released their debut single Say My Name in November of that same year.

Amelia Congedo

Amelia spent her childhood annoying her younger brother by harmonizing to showtunes with her older sister 24/7, 365. Musically, she is passionate about combining delicate and heavy vocals with strong, hard rock guitar. Singing angry songs at the top of your lungs is cheaper than therapy, after all. Amelia is an avid crafter, loves all things creative, and has a passion for attention to detail. You will most often find her making jewelry, writing songs, sculpting with clay, or crocheting clothes & blankets. She handmakes jewelry inspired by The Upside’s songs and lyrics, and runs the band’s online merch store. In her spare time she works full time as a Microbiologist and Planetary Protection Engineer at NASA.

Patrick McCarthy

Patrick is a master of comfort and keeping cool. Professionally, he edits and animates video, but he moonlights as whatever The Upside needs on a particular evening. He learned guitar at 13, and has made solo music, but feels most comfortable playing guitar, singing, and writing songs. He also has a particular passion for producing music. In his freetime you might find him finally watching Andor season 2 or attending a Rocket League LAN event. He has trouble getting the right amount of sleep in Songtember September specifically but, hey, like 6 of those songs are making the album so it’s fine.

Andrew Murray

Andrew is a natural born salesman with the ability to talk to anyone. With a business administration degree he is currently working as a Mortgage Loan Officer and as a part time vodka salesman! When he’s not working or making music he is probably somewhere with friends/family, or at home with his 4 y/o golden retriever, (Johnny) Cash. He has been playing drums since the 4th grade, and while he has performed to some very large audiences during his time with the Towson University Drumline, he is always ready for a bigger show!

David Boegner

Dr. David has a PhD in biomedical engineering and spends the majority of his free time and money on music and astronomy. He started playing bass when he was 9 years old and hasn’t stopped, finding himself in community orchestras, jazz bands, rock groups, and ultimately The Upside. He’s obsessed with the bass he built and when asked what he thought about playing bass for the rest of his life he very elegantly stated, “yeah.”
